Sahaj International School

The International Sahaj School is an 11,000 SF boarding school located on former agricultural land in upstate New York. There are three key elements to this project: the School Wing, with classrooms, a large assembly/dining room, and facility service areas; the Sleeping Wing, consisting of bunk rooms and bathroom amenities; and the Mediation Space which is a unique component of the school’s pedagogy. The concept for this design was simple: to align the orientation and arrange the program elements with the movement of the sun throughout the day. The design softens the idea of an institutional facility by using wood as the primary material for the structure, reflecting the area’s vernacular architecture.
