Amherst College – Morris Pratt Hall

Pratt Dormitory, built in 1911, had a dark and confusing interior as a result of fire-safety changes made in the 1950s. The renovation addresses a pressing need to improve the interiors for sophomore housing, straightening out torturous hallways and clustering bedrooms around open study areas with natural light. The historic ornately paneled library is restored as common space, and the lower level is fully renovated into living space, including an apartment for an area coordinator. Modern mechanical, electrical, fire protection, fire detection, plumbing and data systems are included in the scope of work as well. The historic Beaux Arts exterior is completed restored including replacement of the slate and copper roofing, repair of limestone trim, replacement of the windows and reconstruction of the entrances. The building is fully accessible and includes a new elevator.
